Vintage dish ordered through Strawbridge and Clothier for The Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvaniamanufactured by theMayer China Company out of Beaver Falls, PA. Coat of Arms on front and center of the dish belongs to the school. MayerChinabackstamp on this piece was in use from the 1940s-1950s.
The Hill School(commonly known asThe Hill) is a schoollocated on a 200-acre campus.inPottstown, Pennsylvania, about 35mi (56km) northwest ofPhiladelphia.
The Hill School was founded in 1851 by the Rev.Matthew Meigsas the Family Boarding School for Boys and Young Men. However, it has been known as the Hill School since at least 1874.The school opened on May 1, 1851, enrolling 25 boys for the first year. The Hill was the first to be founded as a "family boarding school" (a school where the students lived on campus), as opposed to boarding with families in the town.In 1998, the school becamecoeducational, enrolling 88 girls in its first year.
Mayer China Company was founded in 1881 in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, by Joseph and Ernst Mayer, two brothers whose father had been a potter in England.In its heyday Mayer China was one of the major producers of restaurant ware.Their china could be found gracing the table of diners, railroad dining cars, country clubs and some of the finest restaurants and hotels in the United States.In addition to their restaurant ware, they also produced a retail line.The factory was purchased by Shenango China in 1964. It was then taken over by Walker in 1980 and bought by Syracuse in 1984, where china continued to be manufactured until the company moved their production out of the United States in 2009.
Cup has a 2-1/2 inch diameter and is 2-1/2 inches tall. Cup is in excellent used condition withvivid colors and design. Item is used and has signs of use. No visibleblemishes, cracks, chips, fading, marks, scratches, scuffs,smudges or stains. Expect minor surface abrasions and wear to design consistent with age, use, and storage.
