This sale is for a glorious pair of Mid Century guilloche enameled, Norwegian made earrings.
An elegant "bead and bar" motif is the framing edge for a simple, round shaped earring face that has been decorated edge to edge with a fabulous engraving. Captured within a thin bezel boundry is a radiating, guilloche engraving decorated by a brilliant, sunny yellow enamel. The heart of the earrings glow with a genuine seed pearl. These two genuine gems have a pillowy shape, measure 2.5mm and have a beautiful silvery white color with a wonderful luster. In fact, with these awesome little pearl "toppers", the earrings remind us of a moire silk lady's parasol!
We so love these kiln fired, glass enamels...could the person who made them have ever realized that we would still be coveting them and their elegant style all these years later? The enameling is striking not just in color. Light rolls across the sharp guilloche engraving creating a three dimensional depth made in light and shadow...not unlike a stained glass window. The guilloche engraving is some of the very best. Also called "engine turning", it is made by a complex machine which cuts the ornate spirograph like design. It's a shame that this type of engraving has almost completely disappeared. They were made by Norwegian jeweler and enamelist Finn Jensen and they bear his trademarks on the back. The earring faces are made in and hallmarked as sterling silver and then gilded / gold washed, the vintage style ear wires aresolid14k yellow gold.
So, these splendid earrings started life circa 1950 as a pair of clip back earrings. For literally thousands of years, women wore pierced earrings. For some reason, the 1920's right through the 1960's, saw women give up the security of the pierced earring for a pinchy, slippy screw and clip back. When we stumbled on these earrings we loved them not for just the clean designaesthetic, but also the quality and beauty of the enamels. We're professional jewelers with a eye tuned to see beauty...and we see it every where! Why tear up the earth looking for the next "new" thing when there are so many treasures just waiting to be rediscovered and remade. Being antique restoration specialists we knew that we could convert the original earrings to pierced and make them a timeless classic.
The earring faces measure 18.2mm in diameter and hang a total of 1 and 1/4 inches long in the ear. They weigh 5.2 total grams, a light and comfortable 2.6 grams each. For reference, a US nickle measures a slightly larger 21.2mm in diameter and a much heavier 5.1 grams. The enamels are in excellent condition.
After removing the old clip backs, we attached the vintage style ear wires and catchers using our laser welder. The laser welder is a machine that generates a laser beam which literally welds the metals together with none of the torch flame, blazing heat or sloppy solder that would ruin the delicate enameling. We always use solid 14k so you'll have good gold for your ears; we wouldn't want less, why would you? You'll love the vintage style shepherd hook and catch wires. They are so easy to use...no more fumbling with (and losing!) tiny ear nuts and the wires give the earrings a saucy bit of eye catching swing. Some gals have been worried about wearing wires, but have been relieved to find the the "catchers" make them very safe and comfortable.
What is it about the vintage pieces that are so captivating? For us, it's the quality and care made into each piece...only a few Norwegian hold outs like Opro still make enamels as lovely as these. Maybe you long for spring and can't wait a moment longer for the flowers to bloom; what ever the case, all these years after these wonderful earrings were made, they have a new life lease with easy to use, comfortable and safe 14k ear wires, ready to dazzle for the NEXT 60years. If you've been looking for a special pair of earrings, something unique that will make your friends green with envy, look no further and offer now!
