Listed NY / Spain Artist (1924 - 1988)

In this sale we have an original oil on canvas vintage painting by the listed New York / Spain artist Peter Todd Mitchell (1924 - 1988) titled \"Tea House on a Bridge: near Antalya\". Signed along the lower left, the artist paints a great Middle Eastern summer scene of a family sharing tea, fishing, and enjoying the warm weather. Framed, it measures approx. 17\" by 29-1/2\" with a sight size of 12-1/2\" by 25-1/4\". There is some buckling to the corners of the canvas and a small line of craquelure along the stretcher to the bottom, some display wear to the frame. Europe and the United States. Mitchell exhibited at such famous galleries as the Hanover Gallery in London and the Carstairs in New York City. For many years he supplemented his income as a painter by creating textile and wallpaper designs.

Mitchell\'s early years were spent in the company of the fashionable and famous surrounding his beautiful playwright mother, who was twice married to the great impressario Leon Leonidoff, Senior Producer of the Radio City Music Hall. His travels with them and his associations at an early age with a theatrical and literary crowd gave him a taste for the exotic.

After pursuing art studies at Yale University, from which he got a war certificate, and the Accademia de las Bellas Artes in Mexico city, he spent the war years in Naval Intelligence (he spoke five foreign languages, including Russian). He then went to Paris in 1947 to pursue a painting career. He was handsome and well-connected, and thus had his first exhibition at Jean Cocteau\'s Galerie Morihien.

In 1948, the noted fashion designer Omar Kiam came to see Mitchell\'s paintings, noticed a watercolor done in a loose, fluid style, and thought that the technique could be used in fabric design. Mitchell did ten designs for him. With Kiam\'s advice and the technical help of Bianchini-Férier craftsmen, Mitchell produced a small collection. He later went on to work with Norman Norell, Adele Simpson and Claude Staron. Mitchell considered himself the artistic heir of the late Christian Bérard, an artist whose influence on French fashion (Chanel, Schiaparelli) lasted well over a decade.

Peter Todd Mitchell claimed that he was the first American to use totally non-objective designs for dress fabrics. He remarked that he used to get his ideas from Greek vases, Byzantine mosaics, Renaissance boiserie, Etruscan frescoes and Gothic stained glass windows. He also created patterns looking at nature: the sun hitting sidewalks, bridge struts, tree branches and flowers.

He eventually attracted the attention of the American wallpaper companies, and by the early nineteen fifties, designed wallpapers and coordinated fabrics for the prestigious New York firm of Katzenbach and Warren. Commissions followed for a succession of distinguished firms, including Scalamandré, Louis Bowen, Van Luit, Walls Today, Piazza Prints and Coles (England). His designs are both abstract and representational, ranging form historical scenes (Goya, Chinese watercolors, Indian miniatures) to everyday scenes (Parisian streets, Venetian canals). He had an extensive career in the wallpaper business.

After moving to Spain in the mid-fifties, he continued a lifelong habit of travels to exotic places, including India, Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Sardinia, and North Africa. These trips furnished him with decorative and architectural motifs which he used in both painting and commercial projects.

By the sixties, he was collaborating with his mother on various travel and food projects and succeeded her as a full-time GOURMET writer in 1978. He also wrote and illustrated two historical novels and many short stories. He continued to exhibit bi-annually in either London or New York.

His wallpaper and textile designs, as well as his watercolors and paintings, are in thirty museums in America and Europe.

Peter Todd Mitchell died suddenly in Sitges, a small town south of Barcelona, in 1988.

World traveler, artist and writer, he was truly a Renaissance man.

An article about Peter Todd Mitchell and his mother Fanny by Priscilla Cunningham was published in The Observer, the summer 2010 edition of the Social Register.

Design 1935-1965--What Modern Was, Designed for Delight, and one published in December 2010 The Century of Modern Design. All these catalogues are Flammarion. They are catalogues of the Liliane and David Stewart Collection at the Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal. In the catalogue The Century of Modern Design the Mitchell collection is mentioned specifically in the history of the collection.

Peter\'s work is in 30 Museums world wide. Most of the works in these museums are designs, but many have watercolors, drawings, and the New Britain Museum of American Art, in New Britain, Connecticut has two oil paintings.

TWO - Tracking

We are required to put tracking on every package, even if it raises the cost of shipping it.

THREE - Shipping Charges

We charge shipping based on the USPS system. We will sometimes ship via courier if we can get it to you within the same time frame or faster. We add a reasonable cost for materials and handling. Our materials cost is based on exactly what it has cost us to wrap similar sized items in the past. We realize that almost everything we sell is valuable to you and there is nothing worse than having something break in its final journey to your hands. We do our best to pack properly and use the correct materials to protect your win. If we are able to get the item to you for less than our quote we will refund the difference to you!

For oversized items or items that will take special attention to package, (building a crate, wrapping many small items individually, etc.), we ask you to email us for a quote on shipping prior to the sale ending. If you do not, we charge the same amount as if you did.

FOUR - International Shipping

We charge shipping based on the USPS international system. The rates follow the same guidelines as number 3 above, though for international customers we add an additional $1.00 to cover the extra paperwork involved in international shipping. If an amount goes over $100 in value we will only ship it with Priority or Express Mail, regardless how small an item. That allows for us to have international tracking. We have to include tracking even on First Class Mail, so we can not just throw something in an envelope and stick a stamp on it.

FIVE - Insurance

\'s policies no longer allows us to charge the client for insurance. However... we still apply insurance to any item that goes over $27.00 in value. We reserve the right to use the insurance carrier of our choice. Sometimes that is Postal or the Carrier\'s Insurance and sometimes that is a private insurance company such as DSI or U-PIC/Shipsurance. If we use a private insurance company the package will not be marked insured, though it will be covered.

SIX - Methods of Payment Accepted

We aoffere by \'s rules and try and stay abreast of their changes. We accept Paypal. Paypal also accepts the major credit cards, or we also take Credit Cards Directly over the phone, (MC, VISA, DISCOVER, AMERICAN EXPRESS, CARTE BLANCHE, DINERS CLUB, JCB) Bottom line, whatever method is most convenient for you.

SEVEN - Time Frame To Pay

We ask all sales to be paid for in the fastest possible time frame. (This is all we do for a living and we need the money to pay the bills and buy more unique and fun items to put up on ). If an item goes unpaid we report the transaction to to recover our fees, this counts as a strike against the winning buyer unless they step forward and pay.

EIGHT - Shipping Time Frame

We make every effort to ship in a timely manner. We are listing tons of items, and are just plain swamped, so we have to schedule a special time to pack and ship. We ship on a first paid, first shipped basis. (We do not ship any item until it has been paid and the funds have cleared.) With the ebb and flow of payments we manage to get everything out of the door within one week. If there is a rush, we will make every effort to work with you in getting it out of the door faster. As you can see from our response, we do not disappoint. OF COURSE, items that need special attention, crating, etc adds to the time frame of those items.

NINE - Local Pickup

Sometimes it makes sense to come by and pickup your items. Sometimes an item is just too big for any other option. If you\'ve arranged local pickup with us, you must pickup the item within 30 days otherwise it will be subject to storage fees and/or relisting. Storage fees for items begin one month after being won, and the fee consists of $5 per item or 10% of the value, whichever is greater, each month it is stored. If the storage of the item exceeds 11 months or exceeds the overall purchase value, the item will be ours to resell in order to recover the storage fees.
