A NOT SO NORMAL PILOT SUPER 150:

Nowadays, anniversary pens are ubiquitous—they make a perfect excuse to create some limited editions and to trigger some artificial demand for some brand. But when did these anniversary pens make to the market? In Japan, the case of the Sailor Jubilee pen at the time of the 50th anniversary of the brand (1962) is well known, and this pen truly deserves its own text. Today, though, we will speak of a previous example, albeit somehow mysterious.

PILOT 40TH ANNIVERSARY SUPER 150:

In 1958, the brand Pilot became 40 years old. At the time, the workhorse of the brand was the Super model, which came in a number of versions and sizes, from the Super 50 to the Super 500. And a Super 150 was released for the occasion. But there was nothing special on this particular model save an engraving on the barrel: “40th anniversary of Pilot Corporation” and only was made initially for the Pilot shareholders.

However, what makes this pen most interesting is the fact that it was never intended for sale. This anniversary pen was made for the shareholders of the company and for some selected salesmen. And the paradox is that this feature might make this pen all the more valuable, Pilot might not directly benefit from it.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:

Generally Pilot nib sizes run one size smaller than their western counterparts. Pen nib features gold plated and the flow is even and the nib is tolerant to variations in angle, in short the nib has a very large sweet spot. About the writing experience, the nib is butter smooth as is expected from a Pilot. This pen had been used when I got it in my hands. It shows some tear and wear on the cap, mostly. The adjustment between cap and barrel and cap and section is perfect despite 50 years of use. And that is especially important for the writing comfort in a pocket pen.

Very smooth fine nib in 14 K gold. There is no indication of the actual point. The nib engraving only says “14K, Pilot\". The ink flow is just perfect for this nib. The demands are easy to meet as the nib is very rigid. Since the pen made to 30 years therefore, there are scratches in the pen body or the nib may have rusted a bit. Please check the pictures for details. Please note that i put the pen as i put the history in front of you. The pen may look not new but you can surely be proud of having one of these if you love fountain pen and a collector of pens.

WHY SO EXPENSIVE & HARD TO FIND:

These models were only sold here in Japan, only for shareholders of Pilot in the beginning and later few pieces intended for only the Japanese market, which explains why they are so highly valued in the west. Even in Japan they are difficult to find. But they are such tough pens, the ones that do turn up are usually still in great condition. These are workhorse pens.
