Vintage Screw-back Lapel Pin - L'union Saint-jean-baptiste D'amerique, U S J B A:
This somewhat hard-to-find vintage lapel pin recently was purchased at a local estate sale, where a family member indicated that it dates to the early 1900's. Its actual age has not been determined; however, the large size of the screw-on 'button' is typical of those used in the early 1900's.
This very attractive lapel pin was produced for the U. S. J. B. A. (L'Union Saint-Jean-Baptiste d'Amerique, a society founded in 1900 for French-Americans. This fraternal group provided financial, educational, cultural, and social benefits to its members. The French phrase at the bottom of the pin translates as "in union, there is strength." The design of the face of the pin incorporates five colors of enamel (red, white, and three shades of blue!), with the lettering, cross, and trim consisting of gold-toned metal. The rear of the pin has a threaded post onto which the large 'button' screws. There is no mark indicating metal composition, but this pin has the appearance of being either gold or gold-filled. There also is no manufacturer's mark. This pin measures approximately 13 mm in diameter, slightly smaller than the diameter of the 'button.'
This item is in very good condition with very light wear. The front of the pin remains very bright (much more so than evident in the photos). The dark flecks that are visible in the photo are not visible without magnification. The 'button' screws onto the pin very easily.
The illustrations in this listingare photos of the actual item being offered for sale. The 'button' has 'rub' from use against clothing. PLEASE NOTE: The pin and 'button' are very bright (neither of which is evident in the photos).
