Up for offer is a vintagebreakfastmenu from the United States Lines cruise ship the SS United States. It is dated Thursday, July 6,1967. The menu, a separateinsert piece,is quite extensive for that time, I would think. It has the image of the Charles W. Morgan clipper ship in the upper left corner. Enlarge and zoom to see all of the great courses that were offered. The menu measures 8 1/2" x 11". The front coverand back covers are "copyright 1960, done by Genuine Steel Engraving Steelograph Company, One Broadway, N.Y. 4"as marked on the bottom right corner of the back. The steel engraved image on the front cover is that of Schloss Neuschwanstein, a castle in Bavaria, andshows amazing detail. The back cover has a map of its location and some information about it. This menuisnumber2 in a series of menu covers that were titled "An Adventurer's Romantic Odyssey". I have others in this series listed. This is a great estate sale find that is a neat piece for collectors of vintage travel souveniers! A little info about the SS United States follows.
SS United States is a luxury passenger liner built in 1952 for United States Lines designed to capture the trans-Atlantic speed record.
Built at a cost of $78 million, the ship is the largest ocean liner constructed entirely in the US, the fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic in either direction, and even in her retirement retains the Blue Riband given to the passenger liner crossing the Atlantic Ocean in regular service with the record highest speed.
Her construction was partially subsidized by the US government, since she was designed to allow conversion to a troop carrier should the need arise. United States operated uninterrupted in transatlantic passenger service until 1969. Since 1996 she has been docked at Pier 82 on the Delaware River in Philadelphia.
