Found at an estate sale, this intriguing vintage 6.5\" x 9\" framed hand-painted photographic print by noted Alaskan artist Sydney Laurence (1865-1940) is entitled \"Trapper\'s Cache\". It shows a small storage cabin perched on stilts to keep it out of the reach of bears. In the foreground a boat rests on the shore. The frame is 9.5\"x12\". The signature (see photo) appears to me to be a reproduction rather than an original one. Caches like this were a favorite subject of his and he painted a number of views of this and similar ones at different times of day and in different seasons.As is unfortunately all too often the case at estate sales, I wasn\'t able to learn anything about the age or history of this marvelous print, which likely was purchased decades ago at Griffin\'s, an Alaska department store. That would possibly have been in Fairbanks or Juneau, perhaps in the early 1960\'s. At that time it would probably have been in a larger frame with a white mat and a caption giving the title (see below). It appears to have been reframed, I would guess 20 to 30 years ago. The last photo shows a detail of a stilt as viewed through a 10X loupe.Sydney Laurence is often considered Alaska\'s greatest artist, particularly for his paintings of Mt. McKinley. His work has long been very popular and a number of similar pictures, usually captioned \"Griffin\'s Alaska\" and with the title and his name in pencil on the mat, were sold in the mid-1900\'s. These are usually described as hand-painted photographs, i.e., prints as opposed to original paintings. From what I understand he painted and released a number of copies of some of these prints, perhaps depending on how well they sold. These copies are by no means identical, however, but instead vary somewhat in the employment of color, making each one a unique expression of his artistry. This print is framed under glass in an attractive wood frame. Both frame and print are in very good condition.If you\'re dissatisfied with this painting in any way, you can return it in the same condition in which you received it within 30 days for a full refund.
