October 4, 2010 Kendall High School gets new name By Rikki Cason The Journal-Register KENDALL — David J. Doyle, retired Administrator of Kendall Central Schools David J. Doyle, retired Superintendent of Kendall Central Schools, died November 18, 2004. He is survived by his wife. Muriel and David Doyle celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on October 17, 2004. They had enjoyed each other's company for 69 years, since they first met in 1935 Mr. Doyle was a resident of Kendall for 50 years. He was Superintendent of Kendall Central Schools for 25 years from 1954 until his retirement in 1979. Following his retirement, he continued in the field of education as interim superintendent at Lyndonville Central School in 1981, as interim superintendent at Honeoye Central School in 1984 and as interim superintendent at Holley Central School in 1988. Mr. Doyle was a 1939 graduate of Hamilton College, Clinton, New York. His teaching career spanned over 39 years, interrupted only by 4 1/2 years of military service. To alleviate overcrowding in KCS, plans were made to build a new Jr.-Sr. High School. In September 1971 the new school opened to students. It included many new features including: team teaching and large group instruction. A room with 100 student capacity and tiered seats would enable two or three large classes to meet together for subjects of interest to the entire group. Separate class rooms were available for biology, physics, chemistry and junior high science. A large gym was added, as well as an auditorium to seat 666. The school continues to be the center of school and community activities. David Doyle's involvement with and dedication to the Section V Boys' Basketball Tournament covered 40 years in a variety of offices including President and 13 years as Treasurer with the responsibility for tournament funds of 120 schools. He was a member of the Executive Committee, directing headquarter's operation during tournament time each March. In 2002 David Doyle was inducted as a member of the Section V Basketball Hall of Fame. David Doyle was a World War II Veteran as Commanding Officer of the 1175th Quartermaster Company. He completed 28 years of military service (1942-1970). He and his company sailed from England to Europe on a LST and landed on Omaha Beach (1944) shortly after D-Day and followed the 3rd Army through France and Germany, supplying Gen. Patton as he pushed back the enemy. While in Europe, LTC Doyle was awarded the Bronze Star with 5 Campaign Stars. His commendation was for superior management and operation of the 1175th Quartermaster Company in the field. As of 1999, Col. Doyle is a Charter Member of the National World War II Memorial. He is a WWII Honoree and his name is listed in the Registry of Remembrances. It can be viewed on site at the National War Memorial which was dedicated on May 29, 2004 in Washington, D.C. Mr. Doyle was a member of Orleans Unit of the New York State Retired Teacher's Association, a 30 year member of Masonic Social Lodge #713, Kendall, a member of Genesee Valley Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA). David J. Doyle was buried with military honors on November 22, 2004 in Mt. Albion Cemetery. In the midst of homecoming activities and sporting events this week, the Kendall Central School District celebrated an important change. As of Saturday, Kendall Junior/Senior High School will now be known as David J. Doyle Kendall Junior/Senior High School, in honor of the man who was dedicated to not only the district but the entire Kendall community. During the homecoming soccer games Saturday, a ceremony was held to officially rename the school after the late Doyle. The honor was bestowed “based on the outstanding amount of leadership and contributions to the community,” school board President Ed Gaesser said of why the board voted during its June meeting to rename the school after Doyle. The ceremony included a gun salute by the Holley VFW and American Legion and the singing of the National Anthem and God Bless the USA by elementary and high school students. Doyle was a Kendall resident for 50 years. He served as superintendent of schools from 1954 until his retirement in 1979. Besides working for Kendall, Doyle was a World War II veteran and was a member of many community organizations. During the ceremony, Gaesser spoke of Doyle’s life and his greatest achievements to the school and community. Gaesser said that one of his achievements was building the high school, which opened in 1971. The school featured additional space for both the students and community to use, a large gym, an auditorium with 666 seats to accommodate graduation and other events and carpeted walkways for noise control. Doyle passed away in 2004. Selected former superintendents Mr. David J. Doyle David J. Doyle Kendall Jr/Sr High School
