This is a very cool carved wooden mask that appears to be pretty old.
I’m not very knowledgeable in this area. So, I’ll do my best to describe it. I’ve taken the best set of pictures that I know how to do (Let me know if I missed something) And, I’ll throw in what I think I’ve learned, while studying it (For what that’s worth!! LOL)
First… My guesswork.. It looks (to me) like it’s from southwest DR Congo… Pende? …. That’s it!! LOL
Now, what I can say for sure… This measures 20” long, from the top knob, to the base of the neck (Beard? I read that somewhere…) approx. 7-1/2” ear to ear and approx. 5” from the from the front of the forehead, to the back edge. I found it odd that there are no holes for vision? (I found others pictured, also) The teeth are frightening and the inside seems to have been chiseled out by hand.
It seems to be in pretty good original shape. It doesn’t look as though anyone has messed with it.
There are some wear areas. Mostly, the end of the nose. There’s some water stains and an L shaped shallow crack, approx. 1” by 1” on the forehead.
