Vintage York Silver Plated Mellophone Ca 1915 (rare) #42470 In Case:
This beauty is a York mellophone ca 1915. I haven't been able to find others like it online, and I am relying on information from an estate sale for specifics about this horn, so my information is only as accurate as that given to me. I apologize for any errors! Mellophone has an 11.25" bell which has a beautiful engraving with "Made by York and Sons Grand Rapids, Mich" in the middle of the art work. Bell is side-facing. Serial # is 42470, which puts it around 1915. Horn definitely needs a polish. Estate called it "silver-plated", but I do not know if that is nickel silver or just silver plated finish. Please see photo for series of dents on the side. Valves work and slides work except for one in photo, which needs repaired. Extra slides are also in case. Mouthpiece is 1" across, I could not find any manufacturer's information on it. Case is in crappy condition. It does close and function as a safeguard for the horn, but it is definitely showing its age.
I played the french horn throughout school- won't tell you how many decades ago that was, just chuckle to yourself- and was able to play this instrument EXCEPT the aforementioned slide isn't attached, so changing notes was not happening. I don't think it's a huge fix to get the slide back on and working- I just won't even attempt it, for fear of hurting this old gal even more.
Please fix her up and get her playing again!
