Interesting Bits: Wonderful young vintage BALTIC AMBER .925 Sterling silver ring by reknowned silver and goldsmith, CARLOS DIAZ of Tuscon, Arizona. The face of the ring is a large 16x12mm rectangular, natural honey Baltic amber cabocon set in a low flat-walled bezel which is centered on a rounded corner, thick Sterling silver rectangle with an 1/8\" surround beyond the bezel. The Sterling surface is not a mirror finish -- but bold, untamed in look --- somewhere between satin and glossy and hammered and plain. The ring design is classically ethnic MODERNISM with clean, simple lines and has been expertly executed by a master silversmith as all Carlos DIAZ pieces are. The amber stone reflects light wonderfully and exhibits its interior of bubbly occlusion....making it a very striking piece. The ring is substantial in weight, fully hallmarked and in very nice pre-owned condition with overall normal wear. The age of the ring is unknown, and was probably made in the last three or four decades. Nicely designed,expertly executed and very collectible. Plus it looks great on!

AMBER: Baltic Amber originates in a vast area of the Baltic states where 40,000,000 years ago it was formed from the coniferous (pine like trees) resin saps of a great forest. As they aged under great pressure, probably heat too, the fossilized resin sap took on the form of Amber after a few million years. Similar material formed only 10 million years ago in other parts of the world is considered much too young to be considered natural Amber and is called Copal if labeled correctly. Natural Amber has been found in Northern Europe/ Western Asia and coveted for adornments for 7,000+/- years. The Chinese legend, one of many from other cultures, states the Amber is the soul of a tiger which when put into the earth split into pieces of Amber....giving the wearer of Amber the strength of the tiger. When found, the Amber material is carved, polished and set retaining its natural colors, opacity, clarity and inclusions ( bits of stuff captured in the pine sap 40 million years ago...even tiny insects, feather, bits of plants,etc.). Natural Amber has medicinal properties which current science has verified. Amber is a beautiful treasure our planet has made for us.
