ThisVirginia Navy 2 pounder cannonball came from the Virginia Navy schooner Liberty which operated inthe James River & lower Chesapeake Bay ofVirginia.

The Liberty* was one of the first ships to serve in the Virginia Navy,and was one of the last in service & was at the surrender at Yorktown. The Liberty was a schooner of 60 tons, square sterned, and mounted ten 2-poundersand several swivel guns.One One of the Liberty\'s prizes was the British schooner Fortunatus, taken in 1779 nearHampton Roads, after a two hour battle in which all but four of the Fortunatus\'crew were killed or wounded.
The Libertyalso was the first Virginia Navy ship to take a toll on British shipping whenshe captured four of their merchantmen; the Olive, Lark, Susannah, andSpeedwell. The Liberty also was the first Virginia Navy ship to take a toll onBritish shipping when she captured four of their merchantmen; the Olive, Lark,Susannah, andSpeedwell.The The Liberty, along with her sister schooner Patriot, were both notedfor their service early in the war. On onesuch occasion, they captured two brigs on the York River (either British navyor loyalist privateers), one of which contained a large shipment of butter,beef, eggs and potatoes.* It It is in very good condition with light to light/medium pitting & has a darkbrown patina. The 2 is an old number painted on it by the Fort Hell Museum where it was on display for many years. It It was bought in Yorktown Virginia in 1946 by the famous Virginia collector JamesAnderson & comes with a certificate of authenticity.
