Vintage, Circa 1920s, 152 Tiles, Deep Bovine Bone and BambooMahjong Set in Inlay Box – Wonderful Flower TilesSet Description:. 4 vintage bone dice, red and black pips in wood dicecoffin. Measurement: approximately 5/16-inchsquare.

. Bovine bone ming andwind discs. There is one disc each of East, West, South and North all carved inChinese characters and painted blue. The ming top is carved and the characteris painted green. Ming top, measurement:approximately 15/16-inch diameter.

. 115 (full set) bovine bone countingsticks. Measurement: approximately 2-1/4 to 3 inches. . Vintage 1920s, hardwood, dovetailed box with bovinebone inlay. Four sides of this box are decorated with bone inlay, as are thefive drawer fronts. This box is inoverall good condition. Bird and flower inlay motif. Most of the inlay ispresent. The box top has one area where there is a crack in the wood, a littlebit of the thin tool-line is missing a little bone. There is another small areain the tool-line that has lifting bone. The back of the box is cracked alongthe seams, one side of the box is missing a little wood. All of this can beseen in the images. This box is in overall good condition. Patinaed brasshardware, one of the handles is missing. Box measurement: approximately L 9-5/8x D 6-5/8 x H 6-1/2 inches. . 152 vintage, most likely from the 1920s, hand carvedand painted, deep bovine bone and bamboo tiles. This set is intricately andbeautifully carved. It has dense, thick bone. The butterfly design, whitedragon tiles were carved by Dee Gallo, the design comes from a vintage, fullycarved set. Wonderful flower tiles (translation below), the flower tiles havemore paint colors than most. The dot suit has more details than most, there aredots within the dots. This set has a few condition issues, there are somestains on the tiles, also about 10 of the tiles are missing bamboo near thedovetail. If the new owner would like, I can fill those missing areas ofbamboo. This set is coming out of my personal collection and I have played withit as it is. There are some splits in the bamboo on a few tiles near thedovetail. Dovetails are tight. These tiles are hand carved; they do differ veryslightly in shape and size from tile to tile.One hundred forty-four tiles are original to the set. One of the six dottiles is a replacement (it was carved to perfectly match). An extra tile andseven additional tiles have been added for jokers, they are a close match tothe original set and blend very well. The added tiles have been stickered. Inthe photos of the complete tile set, the tiles have been turned over and ontheir sides in place. Tile measurement is an approximation; the tiles arehandmade and vary slightly in size: approximately 1-1/4 x 17/8 x 1/2 inches;3/8 bone, 1/8 bamboo, top of the tile to bottom of the dovetail, 7/16- inchbone.

The flower tiles, their meaning by my friend, Ray: These refer to two festivals. The first set are the Mid-autumn festival, the traditional moon-viewing festival on the 15th of the 8th lunar month. The second set refer to the double seven festival, Qixi. The tiles mean to meet together at the double seven festival...this is also known as the Girls Festival or Valentine’s Day. Traditionally, it was when the Cowherds and Milkmaid were allowed their annual meeting.

It was not manufactured utilizingmodern technology with precision controls and exact results. Pieces and partswere in many cases made by hand, up to 90 years ago. There may be somevariation in color and/or size as well as manufacturing artifacts or remnantssuch as surface cracking, scratches or flea bites in the Catalin, Bakelite,resin, Celluloid, Lucite, or other plastics as the material cooled. Chips andflea bites may be a result of materials used as fillers in the plastics or howthe set was played with or stored. There may also be variation in the paintcolors from suit to suit if the set tiles were painted at different times usingdifferent batches of paint.Some tiles are made from more than one type of materials. Some of the pieces ofa tile may shrink differently than others and over time the tile components mayseparate. Game tiles may also separate during normal play. If the piecesseparate, a simple tacky, water clean-up, crafter\'s glue will work nicely toreattach the pieces. On rare occasion, pieces may separate during shipping. Iwill not pack a sold set with separated tiles. If the set arrives withseparated tiles they can be easily repaired as outlined above. As the wood dried, it may havesplit, shrunk or cracked in places. This is what makes the sets vintage andunique and brings the wonderful character and charm that makes mahjong sets sovery popular. Vintage sets are unique in that they bear the maker\'s personaltouch.Vintage metal will show its age and character. The money holders, case locksand other metal components may have an uneven patina, spots of oxidation ornormal use wear associated with age. Additionally, if dissimilar metals wereused to make the parts, there will be areas of galvanic corrosion where the twometal types are joined.If you are expecting that all of the pieces match in size and color exactlythen you probably do not want a vintage set.
