This beautiful candy container is a figural hen on nest, made by the F. N. Burt Company. The F.N. Burt Company was a box company that during the 1930's also made candy containers as a way to stay afloat during the Great Depression. The companies that were creative during the depression years were the ones that survived. The Burt Company used raw materials that they already had for making boxes, and made some novelty items like this to help their Flagging box sales.
The candy container is made from paper pulp that was blown into mold. The container is a light brown, probably close to it's original color, with glass eyes, and light color that was air brushed on. The hen comes off the nest to have candy inside.
The hen is one of two that I have for sale. This one is near perfect! It has a rough spot on the beak, and one weak roughened spot on the back of the nest at the top. The container measures 6 1/2" tall and 6 1/2" long, and about 4" wide. It has quite a bit of it's original paint that was air brushed on. The color isn't as bright in person as it is in the photo.
It is a cool piece that was meant to be used and thrown away; it amazes me when these things survive! I have another almost like this one for sale in another listing, as well as some chicks - one coming out of an egg, and one beside a cracked egg, if you are interested. Although this container isn't marked, they made a bunny that they did mark with the company name.
Although the F. N. Burt Company survived the Great Depression, they are no longer in business today.
