Estate sale find, original vintage oil on board painting by well known Colombian artist Carlos Lopez Ruiz (1912-1972). This work depicts an expressive Mariachi playing a guitar, a pretty lady, and violin player, on board, signed in the lower right corner \"Carlos Lopez Ruiz.\"
Ruiz began his artistic life as a cartoonist in Colombia and had his first showing around 1948. By the 1950\'s, he had migrated to the United States, where he studied at the Corcoran Art School in Washington on a two year scholarship.
His ensuing art education included years of intensive study at the National Gallery, Phillips Gallery, the Fine Art Branch of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, the Metropolitan Museum, Museum of Modern Art in New York, and various galleries in Philadelphia and California.
In the late 1950\'s he moved to Ajijic in the southwestern part of Mexico where he met fellow artist Tink Strother, an American expat. the two became part of the local art scene and exhibiting together.
The couple moved to California in the early 1960\'s, finally settling in Whittier and continuing their exhibitions. They seemed to have parted ways in the late 1960\'s, with her going off to Europe.
The overall painting is approximately 11.5\" X 13.5\", image area is approximately 7.5\" X 9.5\", approximate shipping weight 3.2 pounds.
The painting is in overall Good condition, some scuffs, signs of wear and dings to the frame, could use a cleaning. Please see images.
