About the Maker

Gino Cenedese & C.

The GINO CENEDESE and SON glassworks owes its name to the founder, belonging to a family of ancient roots from Murano. Working the glass on the island of Murano is, and was even more so in the past, the destiny of the men over many generations: it was also the destiny of Gino Cenedese (1907-1973), who went into the glass furnace at the age of 9 learning the craft from different glass masters. In 1946, at the end of the war, encouraged by the new times he founded the GINO CENEDESE & C glassworks. Under his guidance the glassworks, enjoyed a great stimulus establishing itself both at a national and international level because of the high quality of the production. Alongside the ancient tradition of glassmaking at Murano with the production of blown glass, goblets, vases, plates and world-famous Venetian chandeliers, Gino Cenedese was able to expand into the attractions of contemporary art, to the continuous research into new ways of enhancing and interpreting the properties of glass, a fascinating and brilliant material. From the collaboration with different artists beginning in the Fifties historical objects were involved in important national and international exhibitions (at the Venice Biennale of 1950 with sculptures created in part with the prototypes of the master Barbini, in 1952 with fascinating and innovative blocks with submerged figures and abstract motifs – types of aquariums - by Riccardo Licata; in 1954 with the creation of \"Little Theatre and Window\" by the designer Fulvio Bianconi).

NOPAINTED ART GLASS HERE: None of our Murano or studio glass is painted! It is all colored using a chemical strategy that requires the addition to the \'melt\' (or applied before re-firing) of a wide variety of elements and compounds to produce the coloration. From the addition of pure gold, for red color, cobalt-oxide or cobalt-carbonate for deep blue, to neodymium-oxide for those \'alexandrite\' shifting pink-to-blue color effects. Sometimes salts or oxides are sprayed to the surface before reheating in the kiln to create iridescence and other special surface coloration that becomes a permanentpart of the glass.
The alchemy of hot glassis definitely a process that is part art, part chemistry and part dance of musclemovement to achieve the complex works you see here. None of the techniques are learned quickly or easily, but take years of honing the formulas and skills of the glassblowing process. And, glassblowing is rarely done alone, but nearly always requires the teamwork ofthe gaffer\'sassistants to successfully produce this wonderful art work!

BEWARE of FAKE Murano Glass!

AllMurano art glass is made on the small Italian island group of Murano--in Venice bay. Even those glassblowers who may have learned in Italy, or have ancestors from Murano, don\'t make \'Murano glass\'!The Chinese have for the past 20-years been trying to copy Murano birds, free-forms, fish, sailboats, vases and other inferior quality items that they mass-produce in China and flood the U.S. market, trying to pass them off as genuine. Any item labeled \"MuranoCristalleria Ann Primrose\", \"MuranoMinchella Collection\", \"MuranoStile d\'Art\"or \"Murano Glassware\" are easily recognized as oneof the more common Chinese knock-off brands. Many fakes are not labeled, or have telltale labels removed! These manufacturers, importers and retailers are engaging in blatant lies, trying to convince buyers to purchase a phony, inferior product!

How to protect yourself: Always buy from a reputable, knowledgeable dealer, or do your homework and research how to tell the difference! It takes examining and studying hundreds of examples to know for sure, but here is a quick clue.Thumbnail advice: The fakes are usually crude, inferiorwork, that when labeled almostalwayssay \"Murano\" and almostneversay \"Made in Italy\". They rarely have metallic inclusions (flakes/dust,a.k.a.aventurine) and when they do it isneverreal gold. We hope that helps. At OnMyWatch, we are experienced collectors who only offer genuine, vintage Murano art glass! Feel free to message us, with a photo or item number, for a free opinion. We\'ll tell you if we think it is genuine--even if it is not ours!
