Vtg Never Used 1953 Sterling Silver Compact W/cyrillic Inscription - 103 Grams:
This is a vintage 1953 NEVER USED square Russian or Bulgarian STERLING SILVER powder compact. The compact has a beautiful engine-turned design on the lid consisting of many vertical wavy lines and then the initials BK at the top left (see first six photos below). The compact has a Cyrillic inscription on the underside (see second-from-last photos below). I originally acquired this some months ago from an elderly lady in my area who was selling out her silver collection. She told me that she had the compact for so many years that she could no longer remember where it came from. She also told me that the compact was indeed sterling silver and that the inscription on the back was written in Cyrillic - and that she had NO idea what it said. She did say, however, that the "53" in the inscription probably meant the year 1953. There are some hallmarks on the back, in the lower left-hand corner, but they're difficult to make out, even with a loupe (see last photo below). I do see the number 875 or 895, which probably identifies the silver grade, but I am unsure.
The compact measures just over 2½" square and it weighsin at 3.6 ounces or 103 grams on my postal scale! Open the compact by just pulling up the front lid. Inside, you see an excellent framedbeveled mirror on the inside of the lid, very reflective and clear. The body of the compact contains an open well or compartment for storing loose face powder, although there currently is no powder in the compact. I do not believe the well ever contained any powder, as the compact has never been used. The original fitted - and unused - silk and metal powder screen is present as well and is sitting inside the powder well. I'm certain that the powder screen can be removed for loading powder, but I wasn't going to try and remove it.
Overall condition is EXCELLENT for this silver compact - absolutely nothing wrong with it! It is EXACTLY AS FOUND. EVERYTHING is in beautiful shiny condition. The pictures below say it all...
