Vtg RARE SLAVE Charms BALANGANDAN CARVED Africa Brazil Brass Silver WALL HANGING:
$45.95

Greetings and welcome to our sale.
Today we are offering something very unique to be sure.
This is a home decor item with a variety of 9 different charms hanging on it.
You are able to unscrew the one end and add more charms as you collect them.
These charms, as hung, were first worn by AFRICAN SLAVES in Brazil in the 17th and 18th century.
They are called \"Penca de Balangandan\" and were common in the state of Bahia, Brazil.
These were traded as well asbought and sold.
Thecharms/amulets were sometimes given to slaves by the plantation owner as a reward for good behavior or loyalservice or to mark specialoccasions.
The shapes/charms have different meanings.
These were usually made of silver, brass, or copper. The hanger is made of brass.
Ibelieve some of the charms are made from silver but I don\'t see any markings on them. I had seen another similar to this that was marked 9.50.
There are a couple of wooden charms.
The two birds that are facing each other represent Brazil and Africa.
This was made to be hung over a doorway to ward off evilspirits or for good luck.
This measures 15\" across and 15 3/4\" from highest point on brass hanger to lowest hanging charm.
It appears to be in very nice, gently used vintage condition. I don\'t see any damage on it.
So if you\'ve been wanting to add somethingtruly special to your collection you just might want to consider this.
Thanks for looking and have fun on .
