W. H. Harrison Columbian Star Log Cabin China Plate:
A Ridgeway Columbian Star plate with log cabin motif measuring approx. 9 1/2” in diameter is offered in this sale. It is in very good condition with some very faint crazing that can be seen on close inspection. The Ridgway Columbian Star makers mark is found on the back of the plate. Ridgway created this design for export to the American market in 1840 seeking to capitalize on the popularity of William Henry Harrison and his log cabin campaign for the presidency. I believe that the example I am offering dates to the period 1879-1920. There are several differences between this example and earlier ones. The earlier examples are marked Columbian Star Oct. 28, 1840 Jhn Ridgway. The mark on this plate, Ridgways England, was used by the company between 1879 and 1920. The blue is lighter in the earlier examples than on this piece. Early examples also often have the figure of a man or horse in design. Although I do not have any supporting evidence, I think this piece may have been issued in the period when Harrison’s grandson Benjamin ran and was elected to the presidency. He made his connection to William Henry Harrison a theme of his campaign.
