Waterman 52 1920s, Fine Extra-flexible Long-tine Nib, Copperplate Spencerian:
WATERMAN 52 1920s, FINE EXTRA-FLEXIBLE LONG-TINE NIB, COPPERPLATE SPENCERIAN
RESTORED AND WORKING
Waterman52, 1920s, in black chased hard rubber with nickel trim. Waterman's workhorse of the '20s, with nibs for every hand.
Thisnib is fine and extremely flexible. It's extra pointy with long tines -- the sort of nib designed for flexibility and marketed to stenographers (practitioners of Pittman shorthand, which depended on varying line thickness) and artists. It makes very wide lines with pressure, respectable thin lines with no pressure, and is therefore suitable for any pointed-pen calligraphy like engrosser's hand, spencerian, or copperplate. See the writing samples. You can see that the swells are very wide, and you can really get dramatic contrast between thick and thin.
Very good condition with no chips or cracks, clear imprints, good chasing, and excellent trim. There are some nicks and scratches, and some fading of the hard rubber -- the color is the typical olive green.
Restored and working with anew sac installde. Lengthabout 5 3/8inches.
The writing samples are made using the pen itself, dipped inNoodler's BostonBrahmin Blackink. The paper is a Rhodia pad with 5mm squares.
