Before moving on to the description I’d like to provide some brief
context regarding the Waterman No. 13 fountain pen. Waterman No 13s are, amongst
early vintage Waterman pens, relatively uncommon. This can be attributed to triskaidekaphobia
which is the fear of the number 13. For the most part I think it is safe to say we are living in a different time where we like all numbers.
BARREL & CAP
The cap and barrel are in very good condition. There are
no major scratches and/or cracks on any of the pen’s surfaces. The barrel imprint is entirely present (please see
pictures). There are few nicks here and there towards the back of the barrel though they are few and light.
The model number heat stamped on the bottom the barrel is
present and fully readable. Some of the original red wax coloring is still in the model number.
This model will make for a dependable user as well as a nice addition to one's collection given the historical and cultural significance associated with the pen and model number.
pen has been cleaned and tested for function (filling and writing). It
is READY TO WRITE upon filling with standard fountain pen ink.
Renaissance Wax (yes, only the best) has been sparingly applied to the
surface to protect and preserve the hard rubber surfaces. Renaissance Wax is used by professional vintage pen
restorers and other esteemed institutions such as the British Museum. It
is great for protecting metal from oxidation and for protecting
surfaces that often come into contact with hands. This wax will not stain or discolor
with aging. It is 1. acid neutral; 2. water resistant; and 3. alcohol resistant. The Renaissance Wax
will preserve the color of the hard rubber and protect from color loss.
The nib has been adjusted for smoothness and flow.Beyond making sure that the pens I restore write, I like to make sure they write
well. Using a loupe, premium micro-abrasives, and when necessary,
specially made nib repair tools each nib is carefully adjusted to
provide an enjoyable writing experience based on the particular
characteristics of the nib.
The pen has been fully disassembled, cleaned, and has been conservatively polished.
