GLASS CUTTER: J. Hoare & Company of Corning, New York

SIGNATURE: I could not find a signature. This was no surprise to me, since many early Hoare pieces were not signed.

PATTERN NAME AND REFERENCE: This identical piece is shown on page 137 of the ACGA teal colored Hoare catalog reprints. I have included a picture of this, but unfortunately the original was obviously of poor quality. This same piece without the silver top is also shown on page 76 of this same reprint. The cutting pattern name is not given for either piece.

SILVER DETAILS: The ornate solid sterling silver is stamped with a lion, anchor, and G hallmark. This designates that the Gorham Manufacturing Company of Providence, Rhode Island made the silver. There is a tiny mark on the front that looks like a lions face. This is a Gorham date mark for 1891. It is also stamped S830 that corresponds to the catalog number from the ACGA reprint.

AGE: This piece was surely made sometime close to the 1891 Gorham date mark.

BLACK LIGHT TEST RESULTS: Confirms American Brilliant Period (approximately 1876-1916)

MEASUREMENTS: It measures 7-3/4" high. The oval shaped body is 5-1/4" by 3-1/2" in diameter.

WEIGHT: 1.8 pounds

BLANK / GLASS CLARITY: Blown / Bright and clear.

CUTTING DETAILS: The main miters have nice depth and the overall precision is very good.

POLISHING QUALITY: The finish looks and feels very crisp. This piece appears to have been polished entirely by hand.

CONDITION REPORT (ALWAYS VERY PICKY): The silver is in great shape and shows minimal wear. The hinge is tight and works smoothly. The lid turns to lock firmly. The interior is gold plated and the original cork is still in the cap. The handle is in great shape with no heat checks or cracks. Hiding in the side pattern area is a shallow chip that is only 1/8" in size and a few more pencil point or less sized nicks. On the bottom is a tiny chip that is only 1/16" in size and a few more tiny nicks. The bottom shows some typical minor wear scratches on the high spots. The interior looks very good with no sickness or residue. I think this piece is in remarkable shape for being over 120 years old.

FINAL COMMENTS: This choice piece combines an unusual oval shaped blank with high quality cutting and an attractive silver top. It deserves some serious consideration since pieces like this are very hard to find these days. The buyer will definitely be proud to own it!

offerDING FORMAT: There is with a $9 starting price. This is my favorite way to sell even high-priced items. I will never under any conditions end my sales early to sell to an anxious buyer requesting a buy it now.

SHIPPING & INSURANCE: A flat rate for shipping with insurance included by USPS Standard Post (formerly called Parcel Post) to anywhere in the U.S.A. will be $12. This method may take longer, but should save money for both of us. I don't ship my cut glass outside of the U.S.A. Please don't ask me to make an exception just for you. I will gladly combine multiple purchases at a reduced rate based on the buyer's location.

I am a member of the American Cut Glass Association. I subscribe to the ACGA Code of Ethics. I regularly buy quality cut glass and I hope to have plenty more to offer in my future items. I'm very much into cut glass, but I'm not your typical cut glass collector and dealer. I prefer to enjoy this glass for short periods of time and everything that I buy will eventually be sold. Because of this strategy I'm able to sell even the most desirable and rare pieces that I can find and not keep them for myself. Many serious cut glass collectors have benefited because of this and I also hope to keep the casual or beginner buyers happy with some desirable cut glass also. Please check out my other current listings and bookmark my site or add me to your favorite sellers.

RETURN POLICY: Please offer with confidence, your satisfaction is always guaranteed. I offer a 14-day return privilege. If you are unsatisfied or if you feel the item was misrepresented, it may be returned provided the item is in original condition. If the return is the result of an error on my part, I will refund the shipping & insurance costs also. For questions please use the "Ask seller a question" link in the sale or you can phone me at 412-486-9727 during reasonable Eastern Standard Time hours.

Payment

SALES TAX: Pennsylvania residents without a valid resale tax number are asked to please add 7% sales tax (6% PA. & 1% for Allegheny County) to your final purchase price when checking out. There will be no exceptions to this tax if you live in Pennsylvania and do not supply a valid resale number.

I accept the following forms of payment:
  • PayPal

Shipping & Handling

I will try my best to send out items within 24 hours of receiving payment. If this is not possible I will inform the buyer of the intended shipping date. Shipping including insurance is given as a flat rate to anywhere in the U.S.A. Depending on the buyers location and size of the box, I will use at my discretion either USPS Priority Mail or USPS Parcel Post. If by some chance my flat rate amount is larger than the actual cost, I will refund the difference. I do not charge for packing materials & handling. I pack all items very carefully to ensure a safe arrival.
