WILLIAM CROWNINSHIELD ENDICOTT. Manuscript Letter signed: "Wm C Endicott" as Secretary of War, 3p, folded to 4¾x7¾. Washington, D.C., 1886 December 18. To Frank W. Hackett, Esq., Attorney at Law, Washington, D.C. Signed on page 3. In full: "Your note of the 11th is received. I have not joined the Harvard Law School Alumni Association, but I received a notice of their meeting, and a request that I should attend. I do not exactly know what my status is in regard to the Association. Or whether they admit everybody who has ever attended a lecture or lectures at the School. If so, I should be happy to join in your Association while I am in Washington. I hope to be in Massachusetts about Christmas, and I will ascertain what relation those who have attended the school, and have not received a degree, bear to the Association. Endicott (1826-1900) was U.S. Secretary of War in President Cleveland's first term (1885-1889). A lawyer, he had previously held town office in Salem, Massachusetts, then served on the Supreme Court of that state (1873-1883). A Democrat, he was a candidate for Governor of Massachusetts (1884). Docketed on verso. Lightly creased. Horizontal fold passes through "Wm C E", vertical fold through "C E' of signature. Overall, fine condition.
