Willoughby H. Weiss - Autograph Letter Signed 04/13/1864 For Sale
WILLOUGHBY H. WEISS ALS sending thanks for a song, but he has already chosen one with Shakespearean lyrics for the upcoming Shakespeare Celebration Concert Autograph Letter signed: "W H Weiss", 2 pages (front and verso), 4½x7. Regents Park (London), 1864 April 13. To "Miss Masson", in full: "I beg to acknowledge receipt of Mr. Lewes's song which if it suits me I shall be happy to sing, but at present I have a song with Shakespeare's words which I have put down for the Shakespeare Celebration Concert to be held at the St James's Hall. I remain my dear Madam, yours very truly [signature] P.S. Madam Weiss desires her kindest regards & is happy to say that her health is perfectly restored." Willoughby Hunter Weiss (1820-1867) was an English opera and concert bass vocalist who premiered many of the major new works of his era. He made his operatic debut in Dublin, and shortly thereafter in London, in 1842. He gave command performances for Queen Victoria, and was the first to sing an oratorio (Handel's Messiah) at St Paul's Cathedral in 1861. His slated performance of Shakespeare lyrics at a pending festival would not be the first time he had set a poet's words to music. He had done the same with Longfellow's "The Village Blacksmith" in 1854. His wife Georgina Weiss, mentioned in this letter, was a soprano who often sang with him. Normal mailing folds. Lightly worn at edges. Lightly toned at bottom right of front. Otherwise, fine condition.
