Windstone "melanistic #1" Black Lion Figurine, Animal Statue; Test Paint:
WINDSTONE EDITIONS "MELANISTIC" LION TEST PAINT #1
This is our “Lion” figurine test-painted by one of our production painters, Patricia, to look like a “melanistic” (black) lion..
The lion sculpture is from the very first line of animal figures that we produced when we started Windstone Editions in 1984. This piece was retired in 1988. We didn't have any leftover original lion castings, so this one is a fresh casting made from new molds that we created using an old original master.
This lion is airbrushed in warm black with grey and white highlights, and he is lightly antiqued with metallic gold. He has metallic tan glass eyes and a glossy finish. The original lions we sold prior to 1988 were usually painted in a light tan color with dark brown manes and amber eyes (a picture of one of these old lions can be seen on Astral Castle’s website in the Windstone Editions Encyclopedia section under “Lion”).
In addition to the difference in color, this lion can be easily told from the very rare originals by his new hang tag and grey felt pad.(the original lions didn't have felt pads). Additionally, Patricia has initialed this lion on his felt pad and marked him as "Melanistic Lion test paint #1". He is mint and will come with a signed letter of authenticity. This lion and his Certificate of Authenticity will not be signed by Melody Pena.
This lion measures approximately 9" long.
This sculpture has a less finished look than our present pieces because he was produced in the days before Melody Pena had begun using the extensive refining methods that she now uses to sculpt a Windstone piece. The texture this lion has is exactly like that of the original clay sculpture.
