PRIME MINISTER WINSTON S. CHURCHILL (GREAT BRITAIN) - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 04/15/1963 WINSTON S. CHURCHILL
He signs a typed letter to press magnate and wartime colleague Lord Beaverbrook ("Dear Max"). Written less than two months before Beaverbrook died, and less than two years before Churchill's own death.
TLS: "W", 1 page, 7½x9½. On his Chartwell stationery but written from the Hotel de Paris, Monte Carlo, 1963 April 15. To The Right Honourable The Lord Beaverbrook, Churchill Cabinet member during WWII (Minister for Aircraft Production, Minister of Supply, and Lord Privy Seal). Begins: "My dear Max". In full: "I was so sorry not to be able to come out to dinner last night. I felt rather tired, and it seemed better to dine in bed, and indeed I also cancelled going out to luncheon today. But I hope to see you very soon, and I look forward to it." CHURCHILL (1874-1965) became a Member of Parliament in 1901. He successively served as Undersecretary for Colonies (1905-1908), President of the Board of Trade (1908-1910), Home Secretary (1910-1911) and First Lord of Admiralty (1911-1915). Churchill was a Colonel in France in WWI (1916), then Minister of Munitions (1917), Secretary for War and Air (1919-1921), for Colonies and Air (1921) and for Colonies (1921-1922) and was Chancellor of the Exchequer (1924-1929). His inspiring leadership during WWII, especially as Prime Minister (1940-1945, 1951-1955), sustained morale in Britain and helped stimulate resistance in Western Europe. He was knighted in 1953, the year he published his six-volume The Second World War and won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Before the war, LORD BEAVERBROOK (William Maxwell Aitken, 1879-1964) had bought control of the "Daily Express" in 1916, introduced the "Sunday Express" in 1918 and acquired the "Evening Standard" in 1923. The newspaper magnate served in Churchill's wartime government as Minister of Aircraft Production and Minister of Supply, earning Sir Winston's high praise for his accomplishments. Lightly creased. Paperclip impression at upper left margin. Fine condition.
