PRIME MINISTER WINSTON S. CHURCHILL (GREAT BRITAIN) - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 06/25/1935 WINSTON S. CHURCHILL
During his decade in exile from government, Churchill signs a typed letter thanking press mogul Baron Beaverbrook for sending him a copy of a memorandum.
TLS: "Yours ever/W", 1 page, 5x8¼. Chartwell, Westerham, Kent, England, 1935 June 25. In holograph: "My dear Max". In full: "Thank you so much for the memorandum which I have read with attention. I hope you will let me keep the copy by me." Most probably written to William Maxwell Aitken, 1st Baron Beaverbrook (1879-1964), popularly known as Lord Max Beaverbrook, newspaper tycoon. CHURCHILL became a Member of Parliament in 1901. He successively served as Undersecretary for Colonies (1905-1908), President of the Board of Trade (1908-1910), Home Secretary (1910-1911) and First Lord of Admiralty (1911-1915). Churchill was a Colonel in France in WWI (1916), then Minister of Munitions (1917), Secretary for War and Air (1919-1921), for Colonies and Air (1921) and for Colonies (1921-1922) and was Chancellor of the Exchequer (1924-1929). He resigned from Parliament in 1931, but his increasing alarm at the rise of Nazi Germany brought his voice back into the political arena. His inspiring leadership during WWII, especially as Prime Minister (1940-1945, 1951-1955), sustained morale in Britain and helped stimulate resistance in Western Europe. He was knighted in 1953, the year he published his six-volume The Second World War and won the Nobel Prize for Literature In the 1930s, while personally attempting to dissuade the future King Edward VIII from continuing his potentially ruinous affair with American divorcee Wallis Simpson, Aitken masterminded the British newspaper conspiracy of silence over their romance. At the start of WWII, he joined the British cabinet as Minister of Information, and in 1940, newly elected Prime Minister Churchill appointed him as Minister of Aircraft Production and Minister of Supply. Under Aitken, fighter and bomber production increased so much so that Churchill declared: "His personal force and genius made this Aitken's finest hour". File holes at left. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
