A very unusual antique Victorian sterling silver mug or tankard,the body repousse and chased with a marvellous period garden scene depicting in great details a day in the life of a Victorian child.Trees, a garden fountain, the family dog, a tutor giving a reading lesson with Mother overlooking, and best of all the child's pull along doll's cart with doll on board!

Fully hallmarked with thecrown for the assay town of Sheffield, the lion passant for the sterling standard guarantee, the date letter 'S' for the year 1860, and the head of the young Queen Victoria in profile for the duty mark. Maker's mark: MH&Co for the makers Martin Hall & Co.

A very fine period mug, one of the best I have had for a long time for its quality but most of all for its originality and freshness of design giving us an insight of Victorian life. In most excellent antique condition without dents, splits or repairs, and with original gilding (fine gold plated on sterling silver).(Carries a later inscription on the cartouche where the gilding is worn).
