LONDON: Printed by Richard Cotes and Will. Dugard, sold by John Clarke, 1649 [published date: 1649]. Rare Second edition in English, 2 parts in 1, translated by Thomas Johnson. Thick Folio. 13" x 8.5" inches (LxB). Nearly 3" inches thick. Pp. (11ff), 787, (8), (1, blank); 50 (1, errata) pages, includes the engraved title with portrait and medical scenes, numerous woodcuts in text of similar subjects, 4 full-page woodcut illustrations on 3 sheets, decorated with historiated initials throughout. Portraits of Hippocrates (p.749) and Galen (p.751) with select Aphorisms by those greats are also present in this copy. There are 2 title pages & both are dated 1649. Fine original contemporary full paneled calf leather boards, gilt decorated spine sympathetically rebacked in antique style, using matching brown calf leather, gilt decorated spine with 5 raised bands, red & black gilt lettered morocco labels in compartments. The copper engraved title-page, features at the top the famous portrait of Paré, after either Horbeck or Vallée, the six other compartments on the title page; show clockwise Doctors performing surgery, a pharmacy, a human figure for muscle anatomy, a group of human and animal monsters, a table of surgical instruments, a distilling scene, and a human skeleton, signed "T. Cecill" at the bottom right hand corner. Ambroise Paré contributed both to the practice of surgical amputation and to the design of limb prostheses. His writings and instructions are known to be the beginning of modern forensic pathology. He also invented some ocular prostheses, making artificial eyes from enameled gold, silver, porcelain and glass. This edition includes Paré's surgery - various operations, treatment of fractures, manufacturing of artificial limbs, Of wounds in general; Wounds made by Gun Shot & all sorts of weapons(pages 307 to 343), with numerous illustrations of instruments used;concerning poisons, Of the Plague;Of Bandages or Ligatures; A chapter on obstetrics, nerve operations, tooth and eye structures, et al; amply illustrated with over 300 woodcuts (many of them nearly full-page) depicting the operations, instruments and other subjects. Most of the woodcuts were taken from the original French edition, others being cut for the English edition. The work also contains Paré's human anatomy, pathology, his discussion of monsters, and a treatise on distillation. [Wellcome IV p.295; Wing P349]. A classic work. There are numerous close-up pictures of the contents given below; please click on them for a detailed description (See Scans below). Please take some time to view the 50+ pictures in detail, in order to gain a full idea of the contents and condition.

Paré, "The Father of French surgery," made himself the greatest surgeon of his time by his courage, ability and common sense. Paré invented many new surgical instruments, made amputation what it is today, introduced massage, artificial limbs, etc. He described fracture of the neck of the femur and strangulation from hypertrophy of the prostate and was the first to suggest that syphilis as the cause of aneurysm. In obstetrics, it was his description and use of podalic version that made the procedure viable and practicable. Also his little treatise on medical jurisprudence was the first work of consequence on the subject. - [Garrison: History of Medicine]. The translator, Thomas Johnson (d. 1644), apothecary and botanist, received his M.D. degree from Oxford. He was also the translator of Gerard's Herball (1633). Following the Introduction, Paré compares man vs. animals, details human anatomy (skeletal & musculature), the organs of the abdomen, organs of the thorax, vascular anatomy, the parts of the head, muscles & bones of the extremities, structure of the eyes; tumors in general, specific tumors, cancers, pulmonary diseases, and hernia. The next chapters are devoted to the treatment of wounds in general, green and bloody wounds, trepanation, suturing, gunshot wounds, amputation, ulcers & fistulas and venereal diseases. Several more chapters are given on the topics of bandaging, setting of fractures, dislocations [showing Elizabethan period costumes], dentistry, lithotomy, phlebotomy, gout, smallpox, measles, worms and leprosy. Paré further details poisons, bites of mad dogs, venomous bites, (did you know that cat's brains are poisonous if eaten.), poisonous plants, and use of a bezoar as an antidote. As plague was a major scourge of the times, Paré devotes a large section to its various symptoms and treatment. A supplement of defects [false eyes, rhinoplasty, false teeth, artificial 'yard', artificial hand, artificial leg) is an interesting bit of early orthopedics. In the chapter on human sexuality, the fetus in the womb, twins, general obstetrics, birth complications, and menstruation are discussed. Rounding out this topic, Paré chronicles human and animal monsters, some of which are quite improbable. On the practical side, the last section of the book presents simple medicines, distillations, and for those times when all else fails, a chapter on a surgeon's duties in reporting deaths and how to embalm the dead. In this English work by a Frenchman, it is interesting to note the social attitudes on syphilis; lues venerea is referred to by the French as the "Neopolitan disease" whilst the Italians, Germans and English call it "the French disease."
