This beautiful DrakeRedhead cedar decoywas hand carved and painted by renowned carver Tom Taber.
Tom Taber was born and raised in Michigan into a family of sportsmen along the great Michigan flyways. At an early age he was introduced to the sport of duck hunting by his Great Uncle "Doc" and they always hunted over Doc's finely carved decoys. Tom would often help his uncle repair and repaint the decoys over the Summer months in anticipation of the Fall season. After hundreds of dedicated hours helping his uncle, Tom became quite adept and very talented at the art of carving and painting decoys. Tom Taber has carved many special editions for Ducks Unlimited and has also carved many editions based on the early decoys his uncle created. He hand-finishes his carvings in semi-transparent stains and paint, which allow the natural warmth of the wood to show through. Many of his pieces are carved from well seasoned wood, often decades old, that show worm holes and other natural characteristics that can only be found in very old wood. Using distressed wood is a familiar aspect for some of his most beautiful carvings. His unique staining and coloring methods bring out the full warmth and grain of the wood, which in turn enhances the shading and coloring of his decoys that has also become his trademark.
This decoywas most likely a special edition, limited carving for either "Big Sky" or "Ducks Unlimited".Tom hasproduced many of the more collectible decoys of their timeand this decoy is no exception. It is a life-sizedrake redheadand is extremely solid and has extremely nice lines and extraordinary carving including awesome use of the grains and lines of the wood to highlight the look and feel of the decoy. Not only is it intricate in detail but it resembles the actual live bird almost exactly; its that good.He captured the distinctive traits of adrake redheadby accenting that part ofan adult redhead malethat makes it unique and realistic. In the case of this bird not only thehead and neckbut the overall dimensions, bill and taildistinctively say "Drake Redhead". The head/bill separation, mandibles and nostrils are carved in precisely and accurately. The sides and wings are also carved in perfectly on this awesome bird. This big and sturdy bird istruly life-size, butit sets itself aside from otherredhead decoyswith the time andexactness ofthebright and gorgeous detailed paint job/stainingand all other detail carving including the bill, head and and all of the feather groups right down to the tail. This very solid decoy is 12-1/4" long (from tail to beak nib) x 5-3/8" wide x 6-1/8" tallwhich is the size of a realmaleredheadin the wild and this decoy weighs 2-lbs. 9-oz. The yellow glass eyes were also carved in and mounted with perfection to not only location but anatomically correctness. Very niceyellow taxidermist qualityglass eyes and this decoy is perfectly symmetrically carved and painted. This decoyis signed byMr. Taber and dated 1980.
