does not bare any Swastika or Nazi symbol. The Iron Cross was awarded for bravery in battle as well as other military contributions in a battlefield environment.

It is estimated that some four and a half million Second Class Iron Crosses were awarded in the Second World War.

German law prohibits the wearing of a swastika, so in 1957 the West German government authorised replacement Iron Crosses with an Oak Leaf Cluster in place of the swastika, similar to the Iron Crosses of 1813, 1870, and 1914, which could be worn by World War2 Iron Cross recipients
