Ww2 Territorial Medal Group With Presentation Tankard & Medal No-5 Commando:
Over the past 25 years I have collected items like a squirrel with no particular theme other than I have an interest in military items & small vintage collects items. Sadly due to other collecting interests the time has come to offer some of the gems from my collection for sale to you. Most items are fresh to the market having been purchased over the years direct from deceased estates and a network of contacts in the antique and house clearance trade in county Durham. I hope you enjoy my offerings and good luck to all buyers.
A superb group of full size & correctly named WW2 campaign medals to a member of number five commando.along with the recipient’s presentation pewter tankard & commemorative commando medallion
1939-45 star, Africa star, Burma star, France & Germany star, defence medal, 1939-45 war medal & GVI 2nd type territorial efficiency medal. All swing mounted on a long-wearing bar as last worn by the recipient
The territorial medal is correctly impressed on the rim to-410164.GNR.J.H.RUSSELL.RA
Along with the group of medals I have a large pewter presentation tankard engraved to the recipient with the following details, BEST WISHES TO
Along with a large bronze presentation medallion produced on the 50th anniversary of the formation of the commandos in 1990.this is housed in the original black plastic presentation case (unnamed as issued)
I have done some very basic research on number five commando via the Internet and discovered a partial nominal roll of members of no-5 commando including the recipient’s name rank & number. As such I have taken a copy page from the nominal roll and this will be included with the lot
No-5 commando was formed in Bridlington 23-7-1940 from special service volunteers from units in western command.later the same year no-5 commando was amalgamated with no-6 commando to become a company of the 5th special service battalion. In March of 1941 the battalion was broken up and number five commando was re-raised.
Members of number five commando took part in a number of raids including operation acid drop and operation chariot (the raid on st.nazare) following on from this the unit went on to serve in madagascar, india, burma, hong Kong & was finally disbanded in march of 1946
I have downloaded a number of sheets of information with a great deal of detail about the movements of no-5 commando during WW2 and I will also include these with the sale.
Number five commando was a unit of 500 men and as such items to this unit are rare on the market & even more so when they come with associated items to add provenience & interest
it is such a shame that all ww2 medals were issued unnamed with the exception of gallantry & long service awards. and even then any gallantry or long service awards were named to the recipients parent unit. so in this case a member of the commandos has his efficiency medal named to his parent unit. the royal artillery
