This isa very interesting original 7page First World WarAmerican Expeditionary Force soldier's letter, written in France in November, 1918.There isexcellent content, includingsegmentsabout this soldier's participation in the battle atChateau-Thierry and in the September 1918 Argonne offensive.
Muchof this excellent letter is about rumors and reports concerning when and howthe men of the A.E.F. were to be sent home to theUnited States. Thislong letter was written inFrancein late November,1918, by a soldier who served in the 30th Engineers (Gas & Flame). This regiment, which was the first chemical warfareunitever to serve in the United States Army, had beenredesignated theFirst Gas Regimenta short timebefore this letter was written.
This7 page letter was written byPrivate Willis W. Wagener.Private Wagener was an educated manwho wrote very well.
There isexcellentcontent throughout this longletter. The letter is sold with an original censored postcard sent home by Wagener in December, 1918.
In the letter Wagener outlines his movements since arriving in France:
"I went to Angers and from there to a little town near Chaumont - the latter place being G.H.Q., or General Headquarters, for the A.E.F. here in France. Then we went to the camp in thewoods in the Toul sector and from there moved up on the Chateau-Thierry front. We stayed up there more than two months so that we missed out on the St. Mihiel drive, but were down to the left of Verdun to start in with the drive in the Argonne on the 26th of September. After several weeks there I was sent to the evacuation hospital at Souilly, and from there in a French hospital train to Vittel."
There is much, much more. This is a highly interesting letter. I have shownmuch ofthe additional content inthe listing images.
Anexcellent original letter, written by an Americansoldierwho servedon the Western Front in 1918.
