Today I can offer for sale, a very nice \"Great War\" period, patriotic German / Austrian \"home front\" item, in the form of a porcelain mortar or artillery shell shaped \"keg\" with functioning spout, featuring the very highly detailed, miniature likenesses of Germany\'s Kaiser Wilhelm II as well as Austria\'s Franz Joseph and the dates \"1914-15\", along w/ a large field mortar emplacement with its crew and ammunition in the field. This is just one example of myriad types of patriotic porcelain and other commercially produced and available items marked to civilians during the early days of the Great War to emphasize patriotism for the war effort, as well as to celebrate the \"Einigkeit\" (unity) between Germany and Austria. It measures 8 3/8 inches tall with a base diameter of 3 1/8 inches, It is in very good overall condition for a piece that is now over 100 years old. The only marking I can find, is \"30.5 c/m\" on the upper edge, which should denote the metric capacity of the keg. I would imagine that at one time, this had a wooden top / stopper which most likely would\'ve appeared as the \"nose\" or fuse of the \"shell\", thus completing the mortar / artillery shell \"motif\" of the keg itself. This piece would make a superb centerpiece for any collection of Great War / WWI German items, and I can only imagine, that considering its age and composition, that the rate of attrition must be quite high for items such as this, so don\'t miss this example for your collection.
