This isa scarceoriginalWWII frontline letter,writtenin Normandy inAugust 1944 by a soldier serving in the 41st Armored Infantry Regiment, 2nd Armored Division. This3 pageletter was written on the 16th of August, 1944. The soldier who wrote it served in Normandy in both the 41st Armored Infantry Regiment and the 2nd Armored Division Service CompanyMilitary Police Section. This soldierhad previouslyserved inNorth Africa and Sicily.

There is interesting and emotional content in this letter. This soldier states that he was pleased to have received mail from home, and adds that he was still alive and well: "It sure has been good hearing from home. Well, I am still among the living."

He goes on the state that it was hell being on the front lines. He adds that he prayed every day, and that he was trusting in God to bring him through safely:

"I'll be happy is Harold and Dale don't have to come overseas, as it is hell on the front lines. I hope and pray each day that the good Lord will keep me safe. For I know I've got so much to go back home to."

Later he adds:

"So don't worry. I hope to see you all soon."

*** This3 pageletter was written in Normandy by Private James D. Betts. Private Betts had previously served in North Africa and Sicily. He landed in France with the 2nd Armored Division in June, 1944. In Normandy he was initially assigned to the Military Police Section of the 2nd Armored Division Service Company, but for most of the campaign he served in the 3rd Battalion, 41st Armored Infantry Regiment.
