"We had a fairly smooth and comfortable trip across the Channel, lots of rain, but we were sheltered adequately.
Everybody is glad to be here and on the job at last - the quicker to finish the job. I've been in no real danger yet and don't expect to be, so I hope you and Anne won't worry.
Today I drove through the recent battle area on the way to inspect a unit. Wish I could describe to you the scenes of destruction we passed through. It is unbelievable until one sees it himself."
There is more about some of General Burnell's first experiences in France:
"We are back in tents again and all feeling much the better for it. Health is perfect, even though the choice of food is a bit limited. And we do enjoy our sleep.
We have just had a thunderstorm and a beautiful double rainbow. The last few drops of rain are falling now. But the tent is leakproof and the ground quite dry so the rain is actually doing some good - at least it will settle the dust for awhile."
