This isa letter, writtenat Bad Godesberg,Germany, onthe11th of May 1945,three days after VE Day, by aUnited States Armybrigade commander, Brigadier General Nathaniel A. Burnell. On VE Day General Burnell had been in Paris, and much of the letter is about victory celebrations there:
"Just got back from Paris where Tommy and I helped celebrate VE Day. Everybody in town tried to get into one little section of Paris all at one time - around the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs Elysees. The streets were full and yet cars were plowing their way through, each with as many people on board as they could possibly get. No jeep ever had less than 12 people on it.
Paris was fully lighted up for the first time in 5 years, and it was a beautiful sight. There were also the planes flying around and shooting off colored flares."
This 2 page letter was written at the famous Rheinhotel Dreesen in Bad Godesberg, where General Burnell had his headquarters. It was at this hotelthat Adolph Hitler and British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain had met for the last time in 1939:
"We are still on the Rhine (not the Danube) in the hotel at which Hitler and Chamberlain had their last meetingin 1939. The town is named Bad Thereis more, including a segment about an Army Air Force general named JohnnyBarker (Major GeneralJohn D. Barker).
