There aretwo original lettersin this grouping. One waswritten in March 1944, shortly after this marine participated in the MarshallIslands campaign. The other was written in July 1943, before he went overseas. These letters were written byCorporal Raynor A. Michelsen, who was killed at Iwo Jimaon 23 February 1945 while serving inF Company, 2nd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division. Before transferring to F Company of the 25th Marines in late 1944 Corporal Michelsen served with the 4th Service Battalion, 4th Marine Division, in the 1944 campaigns on Kwajalein, Saipan, and Tinian.
The letters have interesting content. The earliest letter was written at the Marine Barracks at New River, North Carolina, on the 14th of July, 1943. In the letter Michelsen expresses excitement about an upcoming furlough. There is also content about his duties. Michelsen was very tired from his work earlier that day, moving heavy boxes of ammunition.
The other letter was written on the 15th of March, 1944. Corporal Michelsen had recently participated in his first campaign, in the Marshall Islands. He wrote this letter to let his mother know that he was okay. He promises that he would later write to her with as many details of his activities as censorship would permit. He states that he hoped to record his experiences and impressions as fully as he was allowed to.
