Wwii Naval Aviator / Ensign Commission Certificates & Condolence Letter Lot For Sale
item is a lot of 3 certificates along with photos from Donald Randall Burke who served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. The first certificate is a certificate from Burke being commission as an ensign. This appointment took place on March, 25, 1942. The bottom is signed by the Secretary of the Navy, Frank Knox. It was stamped by the "NAVY DEPARTMENT".
The second certificate commemorates Ensign Donald Burke's being designated as a Naval Aviator. This occurred on June 2, 1942 at the US Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, Texas.
The third document is a condolence letter to the family of Donald Randall Burke. It features the Presidential Seal and reads "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / Donald Randall Burke / WHO DIE IN THE SERVICE OF HIS COUNTRY AT / Sydney, Australia, Torpedo Squadron #11, 8 January 1943 / HE STANDS IN THE UNBROKEN LINE OF PATRIOTS WHO DARED TO DIE / THAT FREEDOM MIGHT LIVE, AND GROW, AND INCREASE ITS BLESSINGS. / FREEDOM LIVES, AND THROUGH IT, HE LIVES- / IN A WAY THAT HUMBLES THE UNDERTAKINGS OF MOST MEN." The bottom is signed by Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Under his signature reads "PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". His signature seems to be either stamped or copied, not an original pen signed signature. It dos not seem to be written by pen.
Two pictures of Donald Burke are included. One is of him in his suit. The other picture is of him in his uniform. The documents come in the tube which appears to be from when at least one of these documents were sent to who we presume is Donald's widow, Marguerite Burke. The return adress is partially missing, but appears to be from the "NAVY DEPARTMENT / BUREAU OF NAVAL PERSONNEL / WASHINGTON 25, D.C. / OFFICIAL BUSINESS".
items included are shown in the pictures. (except clips and cardboard background)
