History of Okinawa Battle: Okinawa was a brutal, ruthless last battle of the War that influenced the decision to drop the Atomic Bombs. My mother’s cousin was in the 6th Marine Division, 29th Marines, 3 Battalion, H Company. His regiment would be annihilated, our cousin killed in action on May 17, 1945 on a push between Sugar Loaf and Half Moon Hills.
10 times the 29th Marines assaulted the Shuri Line, the 10th with armor, and 10 times they were beaten back with appalling casualties. The 29th Marines broke the Shuri line on their 11th and final assault with 60 riflemen left standing. This victory allowed our Fleet to withdraw outside the range of deadly kamikaze attacks where the US Navy had taken a pasting. (Two springs ago, the day of the Naval Yard Shooting, our family had our cousin exhumed from our home town Catholic Cemetery and interred in Arlington National Cemetery.)The Presidential Unit Citation awarded the 29th Marine Regiment noted that each member\'s determination, fidelity and bravery in this fight was worthy of a Navy Cross.
The 29th Marines were supported by Naval Gunfire. The Shuri line had to be broken as the Fleet was within range of the kamikazes. Admiral Nimitz strongly considered withdrawing the Fleet had the 29th Marines not taken Sugar Loaf and Half Moon on their 11th assault. Had their been the need for a 12th assault, historians stated the 29th Marines would have ceased to exist.
My Uncle was an army aviation engineer officer on Ie Shima just off of Okinawa proper and saw his share of combat from New Guinea to the Philippines to Okinawa. He was near where famed correspondent Ernie Pyle was killed in an ambush. The Japanese fought fanatically as this was Japanese territory within striking distance of Japan, proper. The kamikazes were unleashed in full force hitting the US Navy hard and inflicted the most damage of the war on our Navy.
Curiously, Okinawa was also the battle where the most Japanese actually surrendered, a phenomena that had not previously been experienced. There was little quarter taken or given in the heat of combat. There was a substantial civilian population on Okinawa and there were towns, buildings and farms. Okinawa was developed with Naha as a relatively modern town or small city. It was, mercifully, the last major battle or campaign of the war.
