For sale is a collection of documents related to the death of a United States Army Air Corps officer in the 1945 crash of a B-24 Liberator bomber as it took off from Old Buckenham air base in England on February 6, 1945. The Second Lieutenant was a navigator on the B-24 which was assigned to the 734th Bomb Squadron, 453rd Bomb Group. The documents consist of two telegrams from the Army to the officer's family reporting his death in action and later describing the lack of further information surrounding the aircraft crash. These telegrams are dated February 20, 1945 and April 25, 1945; a Service to Country certificate signed by President Truman noting this officer's death in action on February 6, 1945; a letter to the officer's parents dated November 24, 1958 from Vice President Richard Nixon in response to a letter that the family had sent the Vice President telling him that their son was one of the U.S. soldiers who would be honored at the dedication of a Chapel in London late November 1958; a photo of the officer in uniform and a letter to the family from the War Department and signed by Brigadier General H.B. Lewis and dated September 12, 1946, which provides information about the circumstances of the B-24 crash and about the intended mission that the aircraft and crew were part of on February 6, 1945. There is also a mailing tube from the War Department addressed to the officer's father. Shipping is $3.00.On Feb-22-13 at 06:35:23 PST, seller added the following information:There is a tear along one of the fold lines horizontally in one of the telegrams (about 4 inches) and the letter from Richard Nixon looks like it has been trimmed along the edges a bit but this does not encroach on the seal at the top, the text or Nixon's signature. There is a dent in the cardboard side of the mailing tube near one of the ends.
