Click to see full size image. This WWII USAAF 5th Air Force Pilot's Lot is from the estate of a friend who recently passed away. I will be listing numerous aviation related items from his collection over the next few months.

This lot is very extensive and was one of the centerpieces of my friends collection (see photos). He purchased it from the dealer who obtained it from the Veteran and there is a letter from the Veteran (included) that was mailed to the dealer confirming his interest in selling his WWII items. The lot consists of the Veterans tunic (with ribbons & insignia), his "crusher" visor hat, his painted & patched M41 field jacket, numerous wartime photos of the Veteran and his military file that contains most all of his relevant WWII paperwork (see photos).

The tunic is a tailor made four pocket style and is well marked to the inside with the Vet's initials & partial serial number (see photos). Tunic has no rips, tears, mothing or losses anywhere and is very clean overall (see photos). No size is indicated but it fits the mannequin as a size 36. Upper left sleeve has an issue style AAF patch and lower left sleeve has two bullion overseas bars (see photos). Upper right sleeve has an issue style 5th AF patch and Flight Officers rank bars are present to the shoulders. Lapels have the appropriate AAF officers insignia (see photos). Pilot's wing present to the chest is an unmarked clutchback style and period ribbons below indicate the award of Pilippine Liberation medal w/star device, American Theatre medal, Asiatic-Pacific medal w/two battlestars, Occupation medal and WWII Victory medal (see photos).

Measurments for the tunic are: shoulder seam to shoulder seam across the back – 18.25 inches, shoulder seam to the end of the cuff material – 24.25 inches, base seam of collar to bottom of tunic - 31 inches. Armpit to armpit across the front - 21 inches.

The "crusher" visor hat has the correct flight officers insignia to the front and has a very flexible leather visor (see photos). There is a chinstrap across the front secured at each end by a button (see photos). The material matches the tunic perfectly and the hat is super clean overall with no mothing, rips or tears. Interior is well marked with a maker (Knox) to the crown (see photos). The leather seatband shows minimal wear but has some loose stitching to the front edge portion (see photos). Size is an approximate 7 1/4.

The M41 Field jacket is exceptionally clean and without issue (see photos). Upper left arm has a period sewn issue style 5th AF patch & Fight Officers rank bars are present to the shoulders (see photos). To the left front chest the Vet's 55th Bomb Wing training command patch remains sewn while the right chest has a period painted bomb squadron patch that is unkown to me (see photos). Both patches are approximately 5 inches in diameter (see photos). Reverse of the M41 has a period painted B-24 in flight with "Kens Men" above and six different national Flags painted below (see photos). The painting is extremely well done and shows expected light crazing to the surface. The plane is number 865 to the tail and has a tropical beauty to the front as nose art (see photos). All painting to the jacket is guaranteed period done and can be evidenced in the period taken photos included with the provenance paperwork (see photos). Interior of the M41 shows light wear and is without problems (see photos). Tag to the collar area shows size as 38R and Vet's initials and partial serial number have been penned on it (see photos). Zipper run is the orignal Talon that works properly. Makers label to the extrior right slas pocket is present but is washed out and is not legible. All buttons to the front & cuffs are present and securely attached (see photos). Edges to the cuffs and slash pockets show light wear and are without issue (see photos).

Measurements for this M41 jacket are: shoulder seam to shoulder seam across the back – 19.5 inches, shoulder seam to the end of the cuff material – 23.5 inches, base seam of collar to bottom of jacket material - 26 inches. Armpit to armpit across the front - 23.5 inches.

All paperwork & photos included ID the lot to F/O James Wood Wright (see photos). He was stationed to the Pacific Theatre in November of 1944 and remained there for two years eventially being sent to Japan for the Occupation. He was the artist of his plane's crew and many of the jackets he painted for crew members (including his own) can be seen hanging on the barracks wall (see photos). He was also a member of the base boxing team as included photos attest (see photos). He remained in the AF reserves after WWII and became a commercial pilot for Capital Airlines.

This is a superb centerpiece for any WWII aviation collector especially for anyone interested in the Pacific Air Forces. You get everything (tunic, "crusher", M41, photos & paperwork) shown in all the photos. Absolutely guaranteed as described.
