This WWII USAAF A-2 was purchased by one of my friends from the son of a Vet and I am selling it for him. It is an original WWII AAF A-2 with period painted patches and a period painted reverse.

This A-2 is the real deal and shows average wear realtive to its age (see photos). The leather shell is thick/durable and of excellent quality. It has no rips, tears or losses anywhere and has no issues (see photos). Upper left chest area has a yellow/red painted name "Stosh" and upper right chest area has a similarly done painted name "Mary" (see photos). The name "Stosh" is also stenciled in red paint to both front pocket flaps (see photos). To the left front pocket is painted a multi-colored 9th Air Force patch and to the right front pocket is painted a multi-colored United States Strategic and Tactical Air Forces patch (see photos). Tiny stitch holes indicate a round squadron or group patch was once sewn to the left chest area.

Reverse has a beautifully done classic painting of a reclining Jane Russell holding a six-shooter and riding a B-26 Marauder (see photos). Painted above is, "The Outlaw" and painted below is, "XII Tac. Command" (see photos). The painting shows some expected wear losses but remains excellent overall. All paint to this jacket is absolutely guaranteed period done (see photos).

Knit cuffs and waistband are later style replacements and are as new with none of the usual small snags or losses (see photos). Zipper run is the original small tooth Crown that works properly (see photos).

Lining is original to the jacket, has the usual age soiling and some minor wear areas to the collar area but is otherwise excellent (see photos). There is a name (A. Reilly) and a partial serial number (S-0277) penned to the lining near the collar. The nomenclature label was apparently removed by the Veteran long ago and is not present (see photos). The missing label's stitch holes indicate the jacket was manufactured by Dubow/Chicago as the Dubow label had a distinctive longer bodied form (see photos). No size is indicated anywhere but the jacket fits the mannequin as a size 34-36 (see photos).

Measurements for this jacket are: shoulder seam to shoulder seam across the back – 16.5 inches, shoulder seam to the end of the cuff material – 23.5 inches, base seam of collar to bottom of waistband material - 23 inches. Armpit to armpit across the front - 21 inches.

The basis for the painting to the jacket reverse is the period film, "The Outlaw". "The Outlaw" was produced in 1943 as an American Western film. It was directed by Howard Hughes and its' star was Jane Russell. The film is notable as Russell's breakthrough role, turning the young actress into a sex symbol and a Hollywood icon. It is not surprising that many WWII US aircraft in all theatres of operation used her provacitive pose from the film for their nose art.

The XII Tactical Air Command was formed in the United States in early 1942 and moved to North Africa during October & November of that year. The command served in combat in the Mediterranean and European theaters until May 1945. Afterward, remained in Europe as part of the occupation force.

The United States Strategic and Tactical Air Forces (USSTAF) began as a command complement to that of the smaller theatre organized Ninth Air Force, Twelth Air Force and Fifteenth Air Force. In late 1944 it ultimately became the overall command and control authority of the United States Army Air Forces against the European Axis members when it became the namesake of the US 8th Air Force who had that authority throughout most of WWII.

This is a real WWII made AAF A-2 jacket with a stunning & iconic period painted reverse. It is constructed of excellent leather and remains solid overall. Although it t has some period style replaced components (cuffs & waistband) it would be great centerpiece for a WWII AAF display or for occasional wear. It's very tough to find any authentic period painted jacket that would be durable enough for any wear. Absolutely guaranteed as described.
