This WWII USN M422A Flight Jacket is from a friend's collection and I am listing it for him. It is absolutely guaranteed original and formerly owned by Navy Cross winner Captain James D. Arbes.
Jacket is good quality leather and has NO rips, tears or losses anywhere to the exterior excepting a very small wear hole to the forearm area of the right sleeve (see photos). It remains intact overall and shows average use commensurate with its age (see photos). Waistband and cuffs are non-typical replacements and are very/clean solid overall (see photos). Fur style collar is complete/intact with no dry rot and is clean overall (see photos). Reverse has the typical white painted USN stencil (see photos). Zipper run is the original small tooth Conmar that works properly (see photos). There are no USN perforations stamped to the inner lapel which is correct for this early style jacket. Right front chest area has a period made/sewn VB-4 "Tophatters" squadron patch that has some minor age soiling (see photos). Upper left chest has a period made/sewn brown leather embossed nametag identifying the jacket to Captain J.D. Arbes. Patch and nametag are guaranteed period made/sewn and no other patches have ever been sewn to the jacket.
Burgundy colored lining is clean/solid overall with some moderate age soiling but no rips, tears or losses. No nomenclature label is present but jacket is definitely a pre G-1 style (see photos). No size is indicated but jacket fits the mannequin as a size 38. Interior slash pocket is present with a working snap.
Measurements for this jacket are: shoulder seam to shoulder seam across the back – 18.5 inches, shoulder seam to the end of the cuff material – 24.5 inches, base seam of collar to bottom of waistband material - 25 inches. Armpit to armpit across the front - 24 inches (expanded).
The previous owner did consideable research on Captain Arbes and that as well as copy of his Navy Cross Citation is included with the jacket. Captain Arbes entered US Navy service in 1937 and commanded VB-8 in an attack on a Japanese aircraft carrier in June 1944. He scored a direct hit during that attack and demonstrated exceptional courage when ordered to proceed past the operational limits of his aircraft to attack other Japanese warships (he ended up ditching & was recovered a day later by the USS Hickox).
This is a nice clean/early USN leather flight jacket identified to a WWII Navy Cross winner. It presents a great opportunity for the USN aviation collector to add a centerpiece display to his collection. All items are guaranteed to be original period pieces as described.
