Wwii Short-snorter Style Signature Souvenirs On Notes From Italy And Algeria For Sale
Here are two interesting souvenir keepsakes from World War II: bank notes from Algeria and Italy with signatures of fellow service members.
The note from Algeria (20 Francs, 30 January1929, serial number V.2908) has only three signatures: Ellen Newhall, Irene E. Rigsby (?), and Santa Marie Masuzzo. The note itself is heavily circulated, and has much discoloration and some pinholes, but is otherwise intact.
The note from Italy (50 Lire, March 1943, serial number 012253) is in rough condition but is more interesting. It has several signatures, and in the space for the watermark there is the heading "Masuzzo B M 1/c Island of Capri." Ican make out the signatures ofE. W. Fife, C. J. Henry, P.C. Fisker, Bernard James, McIntyre L P S2/c, Tony Calise, and T.E. Shumate, all on the back; there is one other on the back and two on the front that I can't read. This note has a pretty big tear in the middle.
It looks like Masuzzo is the common thread for these gatherings. I hope they had a fun visit to the Island of Capri and all made it home safely.
