Wally Wood - 2 Ec War Pages Frontline Combat #14 Pg 6+7 For Sale
These two consecutive EC war pages show the ability of Wally Wood to add drama to anything - in this case a PBY take off. Note how in page 6 the plane appears further away from the reader and has a "lost to the elements" feeling and the light use of blacks. The zipatone clouds in the second panel add a certain airy guality. In page 7, the blacks become much heavier, the plane changes direction and heads at the reader and passes him in the second to last panel, finally getting into the air in the final panel - flying away from the reader. Wood must have changed Kurtzman's layout in the last panel as the panel has been cut out and replaced by gluing the replacement in from the back. Just below the the new last panel is a faint blue pencil sketch of the take off. Works for me !
As an extra bonus, the back of page 6 has some pencil layouts. The art has no damage - zipatone still tight and not discolored. The margins have some blue line and the glue used to insert the last panel of page 7 is starting to let go [about 50% holding]. Not hard to fix.
I have seen full Wood stories available [if you can afford them] and individual pages, but never consecutive pages telling a story within a story so clearly showing why we remember Wood as one of the greats. This may be a unique chance to own two great pages of classic EC art.
Just for your information, page 5 of this story is out there in the collector community. Maybe, if you get lucky...
