War of 1812 (Columbia Games)
The Game
In July 1812, the young American republic sought to redress grievances against Britain by declaring war and invading British territory (Canada) to the north. After a bitter thirty month struggle known as the War of1812, the conflict ended in a negotiated stalemate, each side having failed to gain any real advantage. Since then, historians have debated the result of this dramatic war, and both sides have claimed victory.
This game simulates the War of 1812 and sheds some light on the problems facing both sides. Designed for two players, one commanding the American forces, the other the British forces, the game deals with all the essential elements of that conflict, including the tales of militia and indians , problems of supply in winter, and the dramatic naval battles to gain control of the Great Lakes.
The essential object for both players is to defeat each other's military and naval forces, capture important enemy towns, and generally seek to accumulate enough victory points to win the game. While luck (fortune of war) is a factor in play, the game has been designed so that the skill of the players will decide the outcome of most games.
Mapboard
The 32" x 11" full-color gameboard is a beautiful rendition of a 19th century poetic map.
Movement
The game uses a Group Movement system similar to Rommel IN the Desert, Napoleon, and Quebec 1759. It is further refined by optional simultaneous movement rules.
Combat
Battles between opposing forces are decided by a combat system involving both luck and tactics.
Counters
The fifty hardwood playing counters allow for an extraordinary high degree of limited intelligence and automatic step-reduction. They simulate the "fog of war" in a simple but elegant system.
Playing Time
Unlike most wargames, the War of 1812 can be set up in under ten minutes and played to a conclusion within two hours.
