CONDITION:
Good estate condition. As thisis an estate piece, expect scuffs, scratches, or other imperfections. Note that the handle appears to have a firing crack at the top handle and at the side of the spout--itappears to me as the handle was ever broken off. Please also note that there appears to be additional slip applied around the bottom of the handle--this appearsto be of the period that it was made. Photos serve as part of this description--please look carefully.

FEATURES:

A very rare Rhode Island commemorative jug. On one side, with a border of corn stalks, is 1636, and the other side of 1790. On the front, below the spout, is the old seal of the state of Rhode Island with an anchor below the word hope along with other motifs.

It is thought that this piece is from the end of the 19th century as the impressed mark is only \'England\' and not \"made in...\". The state would have celebrated an anniversary in 1890, so it could have been produced around this time.

From Wikipedia -

Rhode Island was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, a Christian minister, Anne Hutchinson, and others seeking religious freedom from persecution in Massachusetts and Europe. The seal\'s words and emblems were likely inspired by the biblical phrase \"hope we have as an anchor of the soul,\" found in Hebrews, Verse 6:18-19.[1] After Roger Williams received an official charter in England in 1644, the word \"Hope\" was placed over the seal\'s anchor and still remains.[2] The outer circle of the seal reads Seal of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations 1636.

Besides the seal, Roger Williams also used Biblical virtues when he named Providence, Rhode Island and the islands in Narragansett Bay: Prudence Island, Patience Island, Hope Island, and Despair Island.
