This is a wonderful early American, Americana interior genre painting.
It features a charming scene with a little girl in period clothes and interior, with a doll in a stroller and a child\'s tea set, complete with broken china.
I\'m guessing it dates from about 1864 - 1870.
It is marvelously painted and I think very possibly by the artist, Seymour Joseph Guy. I base this attribution on comparison of a number of elements in the painting, including the broken china, and doll, (both impeccably painted!) and the child and her dress, the handling and manner of her shoes and socks, the door jam, the carpet, the perspective, subject matter, painting technique and over all quality. The painting is unsigned, thus this is just an attribution, but that is my feeling on it.
It was originally in oval format when it came to me but was mounted on cardboard and cut to fit an oval frame. I had it removed from the cardboard and re-lined on a rectangular stretcher. Some of the painting may have been cut through its history, thus the absence of signature.
It measures approximately 16-1/2 x 12-1/2 inches siteand 25-1/2 x 21-1/2 inches with the frame. It has a nice oval silk like matt and an antique wood frame.
