Arare and highly accomplished ancient Indian west Bengali terracotta head of a Goddess or Yakshi, dating to approximately 100 B.C. - 100 A.D.
The west Bengali state of Chandraketugarh produced some of the most exquisite terracottas of the ancient world,from the 1st Century B.C.-1st Century A.D. This example shows a Goddess, with elaborate ornamentation including thick earrings, necklace and fanned headdress.
A near identical head, perhaps from the samemold,is known from a sculpture previously exhibited at the Freer and Sackler Galleries, Smithsonian Institution.
Height including mount:3 1/2inches.
Condition: fragmentary as shown but well preserved.
